How we inspect every engine

Every engine passes a 5-stage inspection or it doesn't ship.

We say no to about 30% of donor engines we look at. Here is what they have to pass before we will send one to you.

Before we buy

Donor verification

We pull VIN history on every donor vehicle before we even buy the engine. Most yards skip this.

See what we check
  • Full VIN history pulled (theft, flood, fire, salvage records)
  • Odometer reading verified against title
  • Front-end damage check - must be untouched
  • Source photos: front bumper, hood, engine bay
  • Documented source vehicle for every unit
Required: Front-intact donor only - no flood, fire, rollover
Auto-reject if:
Front-impact wrecks, flood damage, fire damage, rollover history, salvage with unclear damage records.

Pull and inspect

Dismantling and visual inspection

Engine pulled with a hoist, never dragged. A tech then inspects every external surface for cracks, welds, or prior repair.

See what we check
  • Engine pulled with proper hoist equipment
  • Block and cylinder head inspected for cracks or welds
  • Oil pan checked for damage or makeshift repair
  • All sensors and wiring harness intact
  • Intake and exhaust manifolds present and clean
  • 8-angle photos taken for customer approval
Standard: Zero welds, zero JB Weld, no cracked castings
Auto-reject if:
Any visible cracks in block or head, repaired oil pan, missing sensors, signs of overheating (warped surfaces, discoloration).
3
Actual tests

Mechanical testing

Compression test on every cylinder, leak-down test, spin test, and oil drain analysis. This is where most used engines fail and we ship none that do.

See what we check
  • Compression test on every cylinder (within 10% of spec)
  • Leak-down test on every cylinder (under 15%)
  • Spin test for rotational smoothness - no grinding or knock
  • Oil drain - check for metal shavings, sludge, water/coolant
  • Turbo inspection if equipped (no shaft play, no oil in housing)
Pass threshold: Compression within 10% / Leak-down under 15%
Auto-reject if:
Any cylinder more than 10% below spec, leak-down over 15% on any cylinder, metal shavings in oil, coolant contamination, knock or grind during spin test.

Paperwork

Documentation and customer approval

Every unit gets a tag with source VIN, mileage, and test results. We send 8 to 12 photos to you for approval. We do not ship until you say yes.

See what we check
  • Mileage tag attached with source VIN and date
  • Compression readings recorded per cylinder
  • Source vehicle photo (proves donor was front-intact)
  • 8 to 12 photos sent to you for approval
  • 48-hour approval window - additional photos on request
Required: Customer approval before crating
Auto-reject if:
We never ship an engine you have not approved. If you want more photos, more angles, or specific shots, we take them.

Ready to ship

Crating and shipping prep

Drained of fluids per DOT regs, crated on a pallet, strapped, foam-protected. Includes a signed assembly checklist.

See what we check
  • Engine drained of fluids (DOT shipping requirement)
  • Mounted on heavy-duty pallet
  • Strapped and foam-protected for freight transit
  • Signed assembly checklist included in crate
  • Final pre-pickup photo emailed to customer
  • Freight booked with appointment delivery
Ships: 2 to 3 business days from approval / Free US shipping
Auto-reject if:
We will not crate without fluids fully drained or without a final approval photo. If anything looks off at the dock, the engine goes back to the test bay - not on the truck.

Clearing up the confusion

5 myths about used engines - debunked.

If you've been told any of these by your mechanic, the internet, or your uncle who 'knows about cars' - here is what the data actually says.

MYTH 1
"Used engines die within a year."
When inspected properly, used engines last 100,000+ additional miles.
Why: Modern engines are built for 200k+ mile lifespans. We only source from front-intact donors with verified mileage - meaning the engine bay was never stressed by impact, flood, or fire.
MYTH 2
"You can't trust the mileage on a used engine."
Every mileage is verified against the donor's title and odometer at the time of dismantling.
How: Our intake process records the title mileage and odometer photo when the engine is pulled. The mileage tag stays with the unit through inspection, photo approval, and shipping. Verification details available on request.
MYTH 3
"Warranty claims are a total nightmare."
Free replacement. No labor charge. No return shipping fees. No core charge games.
Read the policy: 6 months standard, up to 3 years on Premium. If it fails during the warranty window, we ship a replacement free. The fine print is on our warranty page - there is no fine print.
MYTH 4
"They send you just the block and pretend everything's included."
Complete plug-and-play assembly - every external component included.
In the crate: Block and head, intake and exhaust manifolds, sensors, wiring harness, fuel rail, injectors, oil pan, timing components, and turbo if equipped. Full parts list on every listing.
MYTH 5
"The photos online are stock or stolen from someone else's listing."
Every photo is of YOUR exact unit - fresh photos taken right before crating, not stock or stolen images.
Proof: Before we ship, you get 2-3 fresh photos by text showing the actual engine you bought. You approve, then we crate. No approval, no ship - simple as that.
